In Bollywood, quite a few films over the years have staked their claim on being a'desi' take on a James Bond, Bourne or a Hollywood styled action dramatic thriller. However writer-director Kabir Khan says that he didn't want any of that for his spy action thriller EK THA TIGER. Stating without mincing any words that basing a character in the lines of James Bond would be nothing but foolhardy in India, he also reiterates that Salman Khan is as real a spy that could be show in a Bollywood 'masala' entertainer.
"Yes, Salman is playing a spy but the attempt is not to make him a James Bond here. In fact this is what I said to Adi (Aditya Chopra) as well when I narrated the story to him for the first time," says Kabir Khan who has made his third film for YRF (after KABUL EXPRESS and NEW YORK), "I think when filmmakers try to do that, they end up taking the charm from telling a real story."
He goes on to add after a laugh, "In any case I very strongly feel that James Bond can't work in our country. Reason being that every hero in our country is anyways not less than a James Bond. He does every impossible thing with ease. Yes, I always wanted to make a film with a big star, especially with a story like EK THA TIGER but then wanted to keep it real."
However once Salman Khan comes on board for a film, one does expect unrealistic elements as well. With his larger than life image fetching him four blockbusters in a row, it would be tough to imagine him in anything lesser for EK THA TIGER.
"Well, Salman has an inherent larger than life quality to him. However EK THA TIGER compliments that since it is a very big story with the kind of scale and spread that should be quite fascinating for audiences worldwide. Having said that, it also has a very real context with real characters. That is something being liked by the audience," adds Kabir.
